The Hobson & Holtz Report: For Immediate Release

February. 4. 2010.

Mrs. Nixon asked Holtz and Hobson what advice she should give us, her students, on AP style. She wanted us to realize the importance of the AP Stylebook. If you would like to listen to the podcast that featured her question click this link: The Hobson & Holtz Report – Podcast #2: February 1, 2010.

The Hobson & Holtz Report with Shel Holtz and Neville Hobson

What did I learn?

Mrs. Nixon asked Holtz and Hobson what advice she should give us, her students, on AP style. She wanted us to realize the importance of the AP Stylebook. They had contrasting perceptions on it. Hailing from England, Hobson really didn’t have experience with AP style or journalism. His advice was to stay true to certain rules such as avoid using long words if a shorter one will suffice. Holtz, however, worked for ARCO and had a journalism background. He agreed that AP is a way to help out editors.

What surprised me?

I found it funny that they almost did not want us to realize the importance of AP. They said that not everyone in the world speaks English. Those that do, have different language rules (English and Americans spell the word centre or center differently). In addition, another portion of the Americans speak English as a second language.

What do you want to know more about?

I would like to know how Holtz used AP during his career and what style Hobson is familiar with.
